Cannabis has gained recognition for its potential to alleviate symptoms associated with arthritis, offering relief from chronic pain and inflammation. Cannabinoids, particularly cannabidiol (CBD) and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), interact with the body's endocannabinoid system to modulate pain signals and reduce inflammatory responses. A study by Fitzcharles et al. (2020) highlighted cannabis’s ability to decrease joint pain and improve mobility in arthritis patients. Moreover, a 2019 review by Blake et al. emphasized the anti-inflammatory properties of CBD, which can inhibit cytokine production and reduce swelling. Another study by Hammell et al. (2016) demonstrated that topical CBD applications significantly reduced inflammation and pain-related behaviors in rodent models of arthritis. Further supporting this, Philpott et al. (2017) found that CBD not only reduced pain but also helped prevent further nerve damage in osteoarthritic joints. Additionally, a clinical trial by McDougall et al. (2022) revealed that a combination of CBD and THC provided superior pain relief compared to traditional nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). While more large-scale human trials are needed, current evidence positions cannabis as a promising therapeutic option for arthritis management, offering a natural alternative with fewer side effects than conventional treatments.
