Insomnia

Cannabis has gained attention as a potential treatment for insomnia, a common sleep disorder characterized by difficulty falling asleep, staying asleep, or waking up too early. The cannabinoids in cannabis, particularly tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD), have shown promise in improving sleep quality by interacting with the body’s endocannabinoid system, which plays a key role in regulating sleep, mood, and relaxation. THC, known for its sedative properties, has been found to reduce sleep latency, meaning it helps individuals fall asleep more quickly (Babson et al., 2017).

CBD, on the other hand, has been shown to have calming and anxiolytic effects, which may reduce the anxiety and stress that often contribute to insomnia (Shannon et al., 2019). Additionally, cannabis can improve sleep duration by promoting deeper, more restful sleep, particularly in individuals with conditions that affect sleep, such as chronic pain or anxiety (Storozuk et al., 2019).

While cannabis may offer a natural alternative to prescription sleep aids, it is essential to consider the dosage and timing of cannabis use, as higher doses of THC could potentially disrupt sleep patterns. Further research is needed to determine the most effective formulations and dosages for managing insomnia without adverse effects.
